Getting an HTML5 Game on Steam 4 : Steamworks

On the previous part of this series, I mentioned the node.js addon Greenworks. It allows our javascript code to make calls to the Steamworks API, which is basically how we interact with some of the fun stuff Steam has to offer, like:

  • User information
  • Achievements
  • Steam Cloud
  • Steam Workshop

It is a really amazing project, has helped a lot of people, and I’m sure most people (me included) wouldn’t even know where to start if they had to do it themselves. So, if you can, thank Greenheart Games for putting so much work into this by donating to help the project.

Unfortunately, Greenworks doesn’t include Steam leaderboards support, and I’m not sure I have the knowledge to implement it myself. So we’ll have to find another way to bring a social element to the game, perhaps to discuss in a future article.

Greenworks files

For testing our game before releasing it to Steam, well’ll need to create a steam_appid.txt with the appID of our game inside it. The appid can be found over at the Steamwork admin page for our game, right next to its name. Just create the text file with nothing but the appID in it.

We also need the compiled Greenworks files, which we can download from Github. We want the release zip, not the source. These releases are for NW.js, in different circumstances we need to build it ourselves.

We could extract the whole thing willy-nilly into our game directory (alongide our index.html), but we should really just pick one of the files inside that lib directory, depending on the OS and architecture of our executable. This has to coincide with the version of NW.js we’re using, or our export options in Web2Executable (see Part 3).

It’s best to start by picking just one OS/architecture to get things up and running. On Windows, we can get away with having only an x32 version (although it would still be preferable to have a separate x64 version), but on Linux it would be wise to have separate versions for x32 and x64.

So now, ins >lib/greenworks-[whatever].node.

Steamworks SDK files

Now we’re gonna get some files from the Steamworks SDK, which can be found over at the Steamworks page. A Steam account is required, and you might need to accept an agreement if this is the first time you’re doing this. I’m assuming you already have access to your game’s admin page, otherwise there’s not much you can do with Steamworks.

Extract the zip somewhere (we don’t need the whole thing in our game). Again, we’ll have to choose the correct file. The file(s) we need are in the sdk/redestributable_bin directory of the Steamworks SDK:

  • steam_api.dll (Windows x32)
  • win64/steam_api.dll
  • osx32/libsteam_api.dylib
  • linux32/libsteam_api.so
  • linux64/libsteam_api.so

The file goes in the lib directory from before. Our Curvatron directory on Windows is now something like this:

Get to it

Now that everything is ready, we can start using the Greenworks API in our code. The API Reference has more info on how to use everything Greenworks has to offer. The first thing we need to do is initialize the API:

Then all we need to do is use the greenworks variable to call any of the available methods. It’s important to keep in mind that some of the methods might not be finished, so we should always test everything before implementing features that depend on Greenworks features.

That’s it for now. On the next parts I will go into the specifics of some of the Steamworks features and how to use them through Greenworks.

SteamWorks! A steampunk fantasy — cogs turn, steam escapes from a valve and just watch the dial’s needle move! All in bejeweled copper, of course.

* Cogs turn!
* Realistic steam!
* Dial needle moves!

Looks great in Portrait or Landscape. Landscape zooms in and lets you see the animation in greater detail. To see this, please go to your phone’s «Display» settings and make sure «Auto-Rotate Screen» is checked. Also, please ensure you are running a third party launcher, as most built-in launchers do not support home screen rotation. Supported launchers include Go Launcher, ADW Launcher, and LauncherPro, all available for free from the Android Market.

Games — Steamworks

Steamworks.NET is a C# Wrapper for Valve’s Steamworks API, it can be used either with Unity or your C# based Application.

Steamworks.NET was designed to be as close as possible to the original C++ API, as such the documentation provided from Valve largely covers usage of Steamworks.NET. Niceties and C# Idioms can be easily implemented on top of Steamworks.NET.

Steamworks.NET currently fully supports Windows, OSX, and Linux in both 32 and 64bit varieties. Currently building against Steamworks SDK 1.46.

Games — Steamworks

Hello, this extension actually provides a bunch of things now (originally; Family Sharing detection).

This should function for any SteamWorks enabled game. However, I’ve only tested using CS:S on Linux. Windows builds are possible, but I can’t support them.

Interfaces presently supported (and exposed to Pawn). ISteamGameServer, ISteamHTTP, ISteamGameServerStats. If you’d like more interfaces added (with natives/hooks); by all means just post.

Include File: https://github.com/KyleSanderson/Ste. SteamWorks.inc
Confirmed (maybe) working: CS:GO Lin/Win, CS:S Lin/Win, DoD:S Win, L4D2 Lin/Win, TF2 Lin/Win.

My game doesn’t work! Nothing works! :(
That’s a bug, let me know and we can probably fix it.

Installation Instructions:
If your server has an outdated Steam Client (presume yes, even if your game has been updated recently; unless if you know for sure), you need the latest SteamClient. I’ve included this from the redistributable portion of the SteamWorks SDK (1.28). This goes in the bin directory beside your gamedir.
This is no longer the case, Valve has since updated a lot of games with a newer steamclient copy then what’s attached. If your game has been updated recently, you should be fine (a lot has changed in 3 years).
If you’re still running an ancient game like L4D2 and not something more recent and up to date like CS:S or DoD:S you need any steamclient from the past 4 years to have this work.

The rest is pretty straight forward, just extract SteamWorks to your gamedir.

Everything You Need to Know About Steam Workshop

How to download and vote on Steam Workshop mods and items

Farknot_Architect / iStock / Getty

The Steam Workshop is a feature of the Steam Community that’s designed to facilitate game modding. Most Steam games that support the Workshop allow you to either download and install mods and other items with the click of a button, and others use the Workshop to crowdsource content that eventually ends up in the game in an official capacity.

How Does the Steam Workshop Work?

The Steam Workshop is a mod repository for Steam Games. When a developer releases a game on Steam, and that game has mod support, they have the option to tie it into the Steam Workshop. Linking to the Steam Workshop allows content creators to upload their mods and other items for a massive audience, and it provides regular players with a straightforward and streamlined process for obtaining mods.

When you open the Steam Workshop, which is accessible through the Steam Community, it presents you with a list of popular games that have mods available in the system. You can also choose to check out featured games, most recently updated games, view an alphabetical list of every game that supports the feature, or one that places the games you play the most at the top.

You can also access the Steam Workshop directly from your Steam library. When you click on a game in your library, and that game includes Steam Workshop support, you’ll find a convenient button that links directly to that game’s Steam Workshop page.

Is the Steam Workshop Free?

The Steam Workshop is free to use, and most of the mods and other items that you’ll find in it are also free. Some games, like Skyrim, also include premium mods that you have to purchase. When you buy one of these mods, a share of your payment goes straight to the person who created the mod.

If you pay for a mod in the Steam Workshop, and it doesn’t work as advertised, or you aren’t satisfied with your purchase, you can return it through a similar refund policy to the one that governs Steam game returns.

How to Download Mods From the Steam Workshop

Most games that support the Steam Workshop use an implementation that allows you to download user created content, like models, plugins, and mods, that are designed to alter and improve your gameplay experience. It works a lot like modding other games, but the process is streamlined.

If a game supports this use of Steam Workshop, all you have to do is locate something in the Steam Workshop that you’re interested in, subscribe to it, and Steam handles everything else behind the scenes.

The only potential source of confusion is the subscription terminology. Instead of downloading or installing items from the Steam Workshop, you subscribe to them. If you no longer want that item or mod in your game, you unsubscribe, and Steam removes it.

Before you download and install any items from the Steam Workshop, make sure to back up your game files. If you don’t back your files up, and something from the Steam Workshop causes problems or corrupts your save data, you’ll have to start over from scratch.

Here’s how to obtain mods and other items from the Steam Workshop:

Launch Steam, open your Library and click a game that supports Steam Workshop.

Scroll down to the Workshop section, and click Browse the Workshop.

If you don’t see a Browse the Workshop button, that means the game doesn’t support the Steam Workshop, and you’ll have to try a different game.

Every game that supports Steam Workshop has a Steam Workshop page. This page provides you with a variety of ways to discover new models, plugins, mods, and more.

Click any item on the main page that interests you or use the search function or one of the other sorting options.

When you find an item that interests you, click it.

When you click an item in the Steam Workshop, it brings up additional information about that item. If you want to try it out yourself, click + Subscribe.

If you want to remove the item, plugin, or mod from your game, return to the same page and click the Subscribed button again.

Launch your game, and try out your new item or mod.

You can download multiple items, plugins, and mods at the same time, but some Steam Workshop items can create conflicts with others. If your game doesn’t work correctly after installing several things from the Steam Workshop, try removing them one at a time until the game starts working again.

How to Vote on Items in the Steam Workshop

Instead of allowing you to download and install any Steam Workshop item you want through the subscription system, some games take a different approach. These games allow you to vote on user-submitted items in the Steam Workshop, and the most popular ones get officially incorporated into the game.

Here’s how to vote on items in the Steam Workshop:

Open your Steam Library, and click a game that supports this implementation of the Steam Workshop.

Scroll down, and click Browse the Workshop.

If you don’t see an option to browse the Workshop, the game doesn’t support Steam Workshop.

If you want to discover brand new items to vote on, click the large Click to get started voting in your Queue button.

If you want to vote on a specific item, try searching for it with the search box on this page.

If you want to see an item show up in the game officially, click Yes.

Click Next item in queue, and repeat the voting process for the remaining ones.

You can also click any item in the Steam Workshop to vote on it directly.

Click Yes if you want to see the item appear in the game.

You can vote for as many, or as few, items as you like. Make sure to share your favorites with friends. When a Steam Workshop submission receives enough votes, the developer of the game may decide to include it in the game as an official item.

Can Anyone Upload to the Steam Workshop?

The Steam Workshop is available to everyone. There are no barriers to entry, other than your skill and imagination, although submitting items does bind you to an agreement with Valve.

Uploading to the Steam Workshop is more complicated than downloading mods, and you don’t do it through the Steam client. Every single game that has Steam Workshop support has a separate method for uploading.

Some games have a menu option within the game that allows you to upload your mods to the Steam Workshop, and others require you to enter a command line code. Some publishers also provide a utility that’s designed to upload mods for their games to the Steam Workshop.

If you’re interested in uploading to the Steam Workshop, check your game to see if it has an option to do so. If it doesn’t, contact the developer or publisher of the game for specific instructions.

AlienMind: Well.. for some games like Hat In Time, you’re fucked
«The game that this item belongs too does not allow downloading of its items» on https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/? > Guess GOG users are not allowed to use mods for that game.

«I think it’s not actually possible to use a downloader for newer steam workshop stuff, because it uses the same download depot system for mods as for games. It all goes through the steam client now.

In the past the steam workshop used to use a different system where the game itself would download mods using an API, which I think is what that steam workshop downloader is trying to use. »

Ah ok.. so. vendor lock in completed. Congratulations you guys.

This is nothing to do with Steam Downloader and the API, and everything to do with the publisher of the game not enabling those who don’t own the game on Steam to download workshop mods.

The API Steam downloader (and similar web pages and tools) uses is a web-based API — it never had anything to do with the game itself.

If you want a mod that’s currently «locked» for you because you don’t have it on Steam, your options are:

1) Contact the publisher of the game and get them to unlock it (this sometimes works — Klei unlocked Invisible Inc workshop mods for example).
2) See if the mod is available elsewhere, such as Moddb or NexusMods — if not, contact the developer of the mod and get them to get their shit together.
3) Buy the game on Steam.

I suspect that Steam «locks» the workshop by default, which is why newer games tend to often not be accessible via the downloader — meaning it’s up to the game’s publisher to explicitly set the workshop to be available.

Steamworkshop.download — Скачка файлов со Steam Workshop

Сделал по фану, хотел попробовать Steam API, ну и сервис на модном домене (new gtld).

Внимание, могут быть загрузки запрещены для скачки. Тогда будет ошибка: Steam Api doesn’t return the URL to download the file. Это потому что ссылку на сам файл API сервиса Steam не возвращает, по этому эти файлы нельзя скачать через веб сервис.

— первая работа на фреймворке Code Igniter;

— работает на основе Steam Api;
